Unsouled - Will Wight

Updated: Jul 23, 2021

Score: 7/10

The first entry in the Holy Grail of Progressive Fantasy, Cradle.

Will Wight has somehow managed to write a novel (and series) that retains all the charm and joy of manga, in a western novel.

The book begins with our main character (Lindon) being the weakest person in a village obsessed with martial strength. He should, by all accounts, be down trodden and broken. While undoubtedly affected by his childhood and his own weakness, he is smart, cunning and most importantly driven.

In Unsouled, we follow him as he tries to find a way out of his homeland in search of greater power. Note, his morals can be a little grey at times but you barely notice given the bad guys deserve everything they get.

Disclaimer: This will not be everyone's cup of tea. Mrs H tried picking this up as a non fantasy reader and DNF. I personally thought she was mad and went to tell her as much before swallowing my tongue halfway through my eloquent rant.

For those though that love character development, concise fast paced story telling and watching a main character get progressively stronger it doesn't get much better than this series.
