The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
Chances are if you like Fantasy you've read this book. It regularly comes up in polls of the greatest fantasy novels ever and deservedly so.
The prose is beautiful, the story feels fresh (still) and the world is incredibly well developed.
There isn't much not to like. The only criticism I've really seen is that Kvothe (our main character) is a Mary Sue. There is no argument to be had here. He is, unashamedly, and I love it.
There are so many things that recommend this book. The two that standout for me however are:
- the magic system which is one of the best defined in fiction, period, and
- the best academy set up for a book not involving Harry Potter.
If you haven't read it already, don't let me hold you up any longer.
