Blood Song - Anthony Ryan

Updated: Jul 23, 2021

Score 9/10

Bred for battle, trained within a inch of his life for War.

I know that's not the tag line, but it could be.

Valin Al Sorna goes from being a small boy, whose father drops him off at 'boarding school' after the loss his mother, to a baaad man in less than half a book.

The front half of the book is about as good an execution of the academy trope as I've ever read. The rest of the book maintains the quality but ventures into more traditional epic fantasy territory. This isn't a bad thing because by the time the switch is made you are well and truly invested in the cast and story.

This is up there with my favourite novels of all time. I can't recommend it enough for lovers of the fantasy genre.
